Kisumu county has several vulnerable households, most of them being women and children. Other than facing difficult economic times occasioned by the tough economic times and effects of the global pandemic COVID- 19, Nyando Sub-County which is STADA’s jurisdiction is prone to constant flooding. Humanitarian activities are conducted by the organization depending on need, and during the celebration of the organization’s anniversaries. The humanitarian department supports the community members alongside beneficiaries through the following initiatives:
Depending on the availability of resources, STADA provides foodstuff to affected individuals (beneficiaries) and communities. Donations like clothes from well-wishers are also accepted and distributed to individuals in need. Besides, the department also constructs and renovates the beneficiaries’ worn-out houses, at Kobura, Nyando and Ogenya regions.
STADA implements in a region affected by floods, namely Ogenya, and Alara. As a response mechanism, STADA provides household materials to beneficiaries displaced in terms of medicine, beddings, and foodstuff. The department also conducts health outreaches to meet the health/medical needs of beneficiaries.
One of STADA’s main implementation areas is environmental hygiene, an aspect that is integrated in the humanitarian department. In this case, the organization conducts clean up exercises in schools and communities including open air spaces such as markets. The aim is promoting good sanitation, community participation and external stakeholder inclusion.
STADA ensures access to financing by providing grants to beneficiaries, currently the members of the Feminist Movement Building. The funds are meant to boost their businesses, a way of promoting Socio-Economic Empowerment and improved livelihoods. Regarding frequency, the grants are given by the Director depending on the availability of funds, thus depending on resource mobilization from donors or able partners.
