Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains one of the most widespread human rights violations globally, with devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. Addressing SGBV requires a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach that ensures survivors receive timely support while perpetrators are held accountable.

Court Users Committees (CUCs) play a critical role in strengthening collaboration among justice system stakeholders. By bringing together state and non-state actors, CUCs promote coordinated responses, improve access to justice, and enhance accountability through a multi-sectoral approach.

As a member of the Nyando Sub-County Court Users Committee, STADA Kenya participated in a three-day training held on 17th, 18th, and 19th. The training was organized by Equality Now, Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET), and the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ), and brought together members from both the Nyando and Tamu Court Users Committees.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the legal framework surrounding SGBV, identify barriers to justice faced by survivors, and explore practical strategies to address these challenges. Sessions also provided a platform for participants to share experiences, discuss implementation gaps in GBV laws, and reinforce the roles and responsibilities of justice sector actors in responding to SGBV cases in Kisumu County.

Key concerns emerged during the workshop, including the limited protection mechanisms available to survivors. Participants noted with concern that Kisumu County currently has only one safe house for survivors of SGBV, which significantly undermines their healing and recovery process. Members called on the County Government to fast-track the implementation of commitments outlined in the Kisumu County SGBV Policy.

Additionally, participants urged the Judicial Service Commission to establish dedicated SGBV and Children’s Courts to reduce delays and make the justice process more accessible and survivor-centered.

STADA Kenya remains committed to working with justice sector stakeholders and community partners to strengthen systems that protect survivors, promote accountability, and advance women’s rights across Kisumu County.
