Every year on March 8, the world marks International Women’s Day to celebrate the achievements of women and to reaffirm the collective commitment to gender equality. In 2024, the global theme, “Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress,” underscored the urgent need to address systemic barriers that continue to limit women’s full participation and well-being.

STADA Kenya commemorated International Women’s Day at Kibarwa Evacuation Center in Kisumu County, standing in solidarity with women and families displaced by floods in the Nyando and Kadibo regions. Thousands of residents have been affected by recurring floods, forcing many to seek refuge in temporary camps where women bear a disproportionate share of the burden caused by climate-related crises.

By choosing to mark the day at Kibarwa Evacuation Center, STADA Kenya centered the voices and experiences of women living on the frontlines of climate vulnerability. The day created space for connection, reflection, and psychosocial support through shared conversations, music, and moments of joy. STADA also provided dry food donations to support displaced families and ease immediate food insecurity within the camp.

Beyond material support, the commemoration served as an advocacy moment to draw attention to the intersection of climate change and gender inequality. STADA Kenya used the platform to highlight how climate-induced displacement deepens women’s vulnerability, disrupts livelihoods, and increases risks of poverty and gender-based violence.

The event reaffirmed STADA’s commitment to investing in women not only through programs, but through presence, solidarity, and action. As the day concluded, STADA Kenya renewed its call for urgent, gender-responsive responses to climate change and sustainable solutions that restore dignity, safety, and stability for affected communities.
